KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar is set to be released shortly on Wednesday after an anti-terrorism court (ATC) granted him bail in the last of the 39 cases against him.
According to private TV channels, Wasim Akhtar has submitted a surety of Rs500,000 and is set to be released from jail after he submits necessary paper work.
The last case concerned the mayor’s alleged involvement in the treatment of terrorists at the former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain’s hospital.
Speaking to Geo News, the mayor said that he will write a book about time he spent in prison. "Time spent in the Karachi and Adiala jails were the worst in my life."
Last week, Akhtar was granted bail in the 38th case registered against him. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, who was elected as Karachi’s 28th mayor by contesting the polls from jail for the first time in August and has been running his office from prison.
