imageKARACHI: The Sindh Government, as a policy, has decided to set up district level heatstroke relief centers across the province to avert associated public health risks in face of predicted rise in temperature with every passing year.

Sindh Minister for Information and local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon, talking to media Tuesday, said each of these centres will be well-equipped with all relevant facilities including provision for round-the-clock cooling and interventions required to address dehydration, gastroenteritis etc.

These will be manned by paramedical staff under supervision of doctors, said the Minister mentioning that Sindh, increasingly exposed to heat and humidity during summers, needed the intervention.

Sharjeel Memon said Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has already activated helpline service 1122 for heatstroke victims belonging to the metropolis.

People have been advised to immediately report cases of heatstroke via the number so that transportation could be immediately arranged for those unable to reach the heatstroke relief centre or any of the healthcare facility.

"The helpline service will remain functional round-the-clock," he said.

Meanwhile five more heatstroke related deaths were reported from Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre and one from Civil Hospital - Karachi Tuesday morning bringing the total to 1239 deaths in Karachi during past 10 days.

Weather in Karachi is otherwise quite pleasant since Tuesday morning with clouds countering sunlight and cool breeze providing much needed relief to the citizens braving unprecedented heat for quite some time.

The provincial government has also further streamlined its free water tanker scheme to ensure uninterrupted water supply to water starved areas and all hospitals in the metropolis.

Authorities have warned tanker mafia not to disturb in any manner the free water tanker supply to the masses as otherwise strict action would be taken against the culprits.
