LONDON: Hundreds of demonstrators rallied outside the Bahraini embassy in London on Saturday in protest at a crackdown on the Gulf kingdom's pro-democracy movement.
Police estimated 600 people took part in the protest which organisers said was publicised through social networking websites Facebook and Twitter, in an echo of the methods used to galvanise demonstrators across the Middle East.
"We're supporting the peaceful protesters and we're supporting them because they're seeking democracy. They want their rights, one man, one vote," said one of the organisers, 22-year-old Zaid Ali, a British of Iraqi origin.
"We want the British government to put pressure on the Bahraini government to either give people their rights or run away and leave them alone."
Bahrain is under mounting international pressure to exercise restraint following the crackdown on protesters.
The British demonstration came as Bahrain's king pledged to push through reforms and another demonstrator was confirmed to have died in the crushing of the pro-democracy protests.
