LAHORE: Opposition leader in Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz has said that the opposition will work for strengthening democracy and democratic institutions.

Talking to journalists outside the Punjab Assembly here Saturday, he said he wants to congratulate the chief minister as some members of his newly formed "Lota foundry" had rebelled. "However, they are being gathered in the Chief Minister's House again," he added.

He said that horse trading and black-mailing would continue in Punjab. He said the PPP demanded Punjab chief minister to take a fresh vote of confidence and stop "Lota foundry."

He said the chief minister had warned the Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik despite the fact that he had no right to warn the federal government.

He said that Punjab was running on loans from the federation and it would be on the verge of devastation if loans were stopped.

He said that there was no governance in Punjab, adding that matriculation exams had started but students were not yet received their roll number slips.

He said that protests in Punjab had become a routine and the media was witness to it. He said only few cabinet meetings were called during the three years but they had to be called after 15 days according to the constitution. "There is no security in Punjab and the crime rate is increasing," he added.

He said a one-man show would not be tolerated and chief minister should come to the assembly and answer questions.

The PPP Parliamentary Leader Zulfiqar Gondal said that chief minister had lost majority on March 2.

He said the chief minister had shown lack of trust in directly and indirectly elected members and appointed unelected Zakiya Shahnawaz and Raja Ishfaq Sarwar.

He said it meant that no one was competent enough among his 167 members to be appointed as minister.

He said the act had humiliated the sanctity of the house, adding that they had submitted a privileged notion in the house.

He said they would submit another privilege motion against task forces using cars and other machinery of the Punjab government, causing a huge loss to the province. "We will also protest against it in the assembly," he added.
