Pakistan Railways (PR) has decided in principle to develop a 50-kilometer freight corridor-laying a double track line between Karachi Port and Pipri Yard for the transportation of cargo containers. Tariq Asad, a senior PR official posted in Karachi Division, said the mode of project is at built operate and transfer (BOT) basis. The PR will hire a consultant firm to conduct the study.
"The project is already in paperwork will be floated within a few days." he said. He said this 50km corridor from Karachi port to Pipri is of immense importance as traffic burden from Karachi city would reduce to some extent, once the project is completed.
Containers will be transported from Karachi Prt to Pipri by freight shuttle train running on this track. Karachi Port has an average capacity of 3 million containers annually. This project will reduce the traffic pressure on Karachi city. Besides providing convenience to exporters and businessmen, the government will also receive revenue in billions annually. He said the PR is celebrating the year 2020 as freight year with a prime focus on increasing revenue generation by cargo services.
