European stocks rebound slightly at open

Published Updated

LONDON: European stock markets staged a modest rebound at the opening of trade on Thursday, as London's benchmark FTSE 100 index gained 0.18 percent to 5,714.12 points before a Bank of England rate decision.

Frankfurt's DAX 30 climbed 0.50 percent to 6,817.85 points and in Paris the CAC 40 climbed 0.39 percent to 3,326.31.

European equities had slumped on Wednesday, with Frankfurt and Paris closing down almost 3.0 percent and London losing 2.30 percent, following a poor Spanish debt auction, weak eurozone economic data and due to the reluctance of the Federal Reserve to launch a fresh round of US stimulus, traders said.

With the European economy tipping towards recession, the European Central Bank on Wednesday voted at its regular monthly meeting to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 1.0 percent.

On Thursday, the Bank of England announces its latest monetary policy decisions. Analysts widely expect the BoE to keep its main interest rate at a record-low 0.50 percent and maintain its level of cash stimulus, as Britain stands close to a return to recession.
