Tokyo stocks open up 0.32 percent

Published Updated

TOKYO: Tokyo stocks opened 0.32 percent higher on Tuesday as investors watched for policy moves by central bankers in the United States and Japan.

The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange opened up 31.39 points at 9,921.25.

Market players will likely stay on the sidelines ahead of the meetings of the Bank of Japan and US Federal Reserve, Rakuten Securities senior market analyst Masayuki Doshida told Dow Jones Newswires.

Policymakers at the BoJ are to wrap up a two-day meeting Tuesday and the Federal Reserve will hold a one-day meeting later in the day.

US stocks finished mixed Monday ahead of the Fed policy board meeting that analysts hope will give a clearer picture of the US economy's direction and signs of a firm recovery.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.29 percent at 12,959.71, but the broad-based S&P 500 was flat, edging down 0.02 percent to 1,371.09.

The Fed's policy board is not expected to take any action at the meeting Tuesday, but may signal whether central bankers see the world's biggest economy gaining traction.

The euro bought $1.3166 and 108.44 yen in early Asian trade, up from $1.3147 and 108.22 yen in New York late Monday. The dollar was hardly changed at 82.35 yen.
