Prime Minister Imran Khan-led administration is trying to get former Finance Minister Asad Umar back in cabinet with another portfolio, sources in the Prime Minister's Office stated. Sources said that on Tuesday Umar held a one-to-one meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan who asked him to rejoin the cabinet. The meeting was a part of the efforts to convince Umar to rejoin the cabinet. However, they added that Asad Umar sought some time for thinking on the offer. Prime Minister Khan wanted Umar to take the charge of Petroleum Division which he was unwilling to take.
Sources added that former finance minister may be given the charge of Ministry of Industries because advisor to prime minister on commerce is having portfolio of different ministries and divisions - Board of Investment (BOI), Ministry of Industries, Commerce and Textile Divisions.
The former finance minister announced his resignation as finance minister on April 18 in a tweet that said, "As part of a cabinet reshuffle, PM desired that I take the energy minister portfolio instead of finance. However, I have obtained his consent to not take any cabinet position. I strongly believe Imran Khan is the best hope for Pakistan and Insha Allah will make a Naya Pakistan."
Umar, a day after his resignation, flew for Karachi and returned to the federal capital only once to attend the meeting of the National Assembly and now for a meeting with the Prime Minister as some forces behind the scene have been in action to convince him to rejoin the federal cabinet.
