Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday summoned the case file of 12 May, 2007 carnage, which claimed more than 30 lives in the provincial capital when former CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry arrived in the city after he was deposed in March 2007.
At SC's Karachi Registry, CJP took up the issue of 12 May 2007 carnage and asked Barrister Faisal Siddiqui about the investigations to the bloody incidents on May 12, 2007. "Whether investigations have been conducted into this carnage", Saqib Nisar inquired from Faisal Siddiqui, who submitted before the court that this case is being heard in Singh High Court (SHC).
The Chief Justice sought the report of 12 May case by asking Barrister Siddiqui to give case number as case would look into this matter itself. Earlier Fateha was offered for the victims of May 12, 2007 violence at Karachi Registry.
Meanwhile, a meeting of Karachi's lawyers' community adopted a resolution to condemn violence on May 12, 2007 at General Body meeting of Karachi Bar Association (KBA). The meeting was attended by a large number of lawyers with the leaders of community. Haider Imam, President KBA said that lawyer's community made the sacrifices for the independence of judiciary rather than for personal interest on May 12, 2007 and said that many innocent lives expired on that day when violence was at full peak in the city.
He deplored that no progress has been made despite the fact that we identified the names of culprits in the affidavits submitted before a seven-member bench of the High Court.
Salahuddin Gandapur, Vice President Sindh Bar Council said that political parties count their workers, who were murdered on May 12, 2007 whereas police said that it had no proof against the culprits. But Karachi Bar lodged the case against the real culprits of violence on "fateful day" of 2007. He said that Sindh Bar Council was committed to stand against those who abrogated the constitution and suppressed the rights of people.
The resolution adopted the general body meeting demanded the judicial inquiry of May 12, 2007 violence by the Supreme Court judges. It was also decided to hold a meeting on May 14, 2018 to chalk out future line of action on the issue.
