Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday summoned Chief Minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif in the contaminated water case on Sunday. Chief Justice Nisar was hearing the case regarding contaminated water in Ravi River at the Lahore Registry of the Supreme Court. Earlier, amicus curiae of the court informed that 540 million gallons of contaminated water is dumped into the river. The CJ asked that why the provincial government failed in setting up a water treatment plant. He said the court had summoned the Sindh Chief Minister in the case and now they will summon the CM Punjab.
The CJ directed the Chief Secretary Punjab to ensure the Chief Minister's appearance before the court on Saturday if he is available. In case he is not willing to appear, the court will have to issue some other order, he added.
The CM should come today (Saturday) if he can, if not, he may appear before the court tomorrow (Sunday), the CJ remarked. During the tea interval, the Chief Secretary went outside the courtroom to contact the CM in compliance with the judicial order. The Chief Secretary after the interval informed the court that Shehbaz Sharif can appear before the court after which the CJ ordered him to appear in the hearing today (Sunday) at 11.00pm.
