The city police on Tuesday rounded up at least eight suspects in connection with killing of a police constable and injuring another at a police picket in Defence area on Sunday night. Though the police officials are reluctant to officially share details of the incident, sources said the department has taken up at least eight suspects including son of an 'influential man' who enjoys strong relations with the Sharif family.
On New Year celebrations, Constable Mustansar Hussain was killed while Constable Muhammad Qasim sustained injuries after a rashly-driven car rammed into a police picket near Cavalry Chowk. The sources said prime suspect, Mohammad Saeed, was already in their custody. However, they have also rounded up his friend and other suspects, including Mustafa, son of an influential man.
It is believed that Saeed had been over-speeding when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a check post manned by constables Mustansar Hussain and Qasim. The sources added that the vehicle was allegedly owned by Mustafa, who is the friend of Saeed. According to the FIR, both the constables had signaled a speeding car to stop, but it ended up hitting the two constables and critically injuring them.
It also said that the driver of the vehicle fled after the scene by leaving the car. The FIR accused the suspects of causing death without intention. Meanwhile, at least three employees of the Punjab Institute of Mental Health sustained burn injuries when a gas cylinder exploded in a newly-constructed addiction center.
According to Executive Director PIMHD Dr Nasir Bhatti, the explosion occurred at about 10:30 am due to gas leakage which caused burn to three officials. He said the fire was immediately brought under control and the injured were sent to the emergency of Jinnah Hospital. All the three injured are in safe condition, he said.
