Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday sought details of two-year extension in job granted to Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Saeed Ahmad, a close aide of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. In a letter written to the principal secretary to the prime minister, PTI leader Andleeb Abbas alleged that Saeed Ahmad helped Ishaq Dar in laundering money for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
"Saeed Ahmad is a friend of Ishaq Dar an his name was taken as a facilitator involved in money laundering and managing the Sharif family's wealth as was admitted in an affidavit given by Ishaq Dar before a magistrate back in April 25, 2000," she added.
Seeking information under Freedom of Information Ordinance, 2002, the PTI leader also pointed out that Saeed Ahmed can not hold any other position while being deputy governor SBP, as he is currently holding four positions.
"He [Saeed] is holding four other illegal positions, which Sharifs have given to him to shut his mouth...he's serving as chairmen HBFC (House Building Finance Corporation), Pakistan Mortgage Refinance Company (PMRC) and Exim Bank of Pakistan, and as a director at Zarai Taraqqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL)," she maintained.
She said that holding four offices besides being deputy governor SBP, is a clear violation of section 10, clause 7 and 10C of SBP Act 1956, adding that being the regulator of all the banking companies, Saeed can not chair the Board of any other bank or financial institution which is a blatant conflict of interest.
Andleeb alleged that Saeed has accepted that Dar happens to be his childhood buddy, adding this is the reason Dar proposed his name for the coveted slot as deputy governor.
"This cronyism has got an extension for a period of two years for him [Saeed]...how he can get an extension with such blatant charges of corruption and violation of law," she questioned.
She warned if the PM Office fails to respond to her letter, she would be forced to knock the door of a court of law, as no country can give job extension to a man against whom there are money laundering allegations. The federal government, in pursuance of Section 10(9) of SBP Act, 1956 had recently re-appointed Saeed Ahmad as deputy governor of SBP for a period of two years effective from January 21, whose three-year term as deputy governor expired on January 20, 2017.
