Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi will leave for United States on 10-day visit to meet the transition team of President-elect Donald Trump and other high US officials. Foreign Office sources said that the Prime Minister's Special Assistant during his stay in the US would meet a number of US senior officials, especially the transition team of the President-elect, to discuss bilateral relations and issues of common interest.
The decision to send his special assistant on foreign affairs comes following Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's telephonic contact with President-elect Donald Trump last week wherein the latter conveyed to the former: "I am ready and willing to play any role that you want me to play to address and find solutions to the outstanding problems." They said that Pakistani diplomatic officials in Washington and New York are already in contact with the transition team of Donald Trump with a view to take the bilateral relations forward under the new administration in the US.
During his election campaign, President-elect Trump has offered to play role of a mediator between Pakistan and India to resolve outstanding issues between the two countries including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Pakistan welcomed the offer. "Pakistan welcomes Trump's willingness to play a role in resolving the outstanding issues between Pakistan and India, including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir," Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said this during his weekly media briefing on December 01, 2016. The sources further said that Fatemi is expected to meet high officials of the outgoing Obama administration as well as the new officials of the new administration under Trump to forge workable relationship, once the transition is completed.
