KARACHI: At least five persons injured on Saturday in a hand grenade attack at hardware shop located in the limits of Super Market police station.

According to police, at around 11:15am, two unidentified man hurled hand grenade at Green Hardware shop situated near Dakkhana Chowrangi at Liaquatabad no. 2 in Super Market police remits, leaving an owner of the shop Obaid Raja and four others namely Asad Aslam, 20, Sohail Aziz, 22, Sardar Ghayasuddin, 35 and Mukhtiar Hussain, 27 injured. The injured were transported to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced their conditions out of danger. Following the said incident, Police, Rangers and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) rushed to the spot and engaged in collecting evidences from the crime spot. Meanwhile, the BDS officials claimed that the Russian made hand grenade contained 65 grams explosive material was used in this attack.

The incident also caused of panic among the traders and shopkeepers of Liaquatabad, who shut their shops down and staged a protest demonstration. They shouted slogans against the extortionists and demanded to take stern measures to avert such incidents in future. Meanwhile police officials suspected the involvement of Lyari gangsters behind the said incident. DSP Rustam Khattak held the shopkeepers and traders responsible for encouraging extortion culture in the city, adding that the business community did not corporate with police when they face extortion threats. No case was registered till filing of this report.
