ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of Kashmir Centre Brussels, Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo, has said that Indian troops are perpetrating gross human rights violations in Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK).
Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo, addressing a seminar in Brussels titled "Gender and Conflict The Search for International Justice Mechanisms", held in connection with the 20th anniversary of Kunan Poshpora incident, pointed out that despite numerous calls for investigations the Indian government did nothing even after the 20 years, KMS reported.
He outlined the steps that would be taken to once again to highlight the issue and to seek justice in international foray at the UN and at the European institutions.
He urged the occupation authorities to release all the illegally detained pro-freedom leaders and activists and called for an independent inquiry into the discovery of mass graves in the occupied territory.
The other speakers of the seminar were Aslihan Tekin, Ms Gemma Ganlond Global Women Studies Programme, Galway, Ireland, Khalid Mehmood, President of Parc Belg Social Organisation, and Ms Eva Malisuis, Mediator and Trainer. The event was moderated by Ronald Barnes, Chairman of the Indigenous Peoples and Nations Coalition
The seminar aimed to investigate which steps could be taken to curtail gender-based violence during conflict and to discuss the steps that the international community can take to better ensure that victims receive adequate justice.
Ms Aslihan Tekin stressed the need for an evolving international humanitarian law that better takes into account the role of gender in conflict.
She suggested that recommendations to increase the number of women involved in international peacekeeping operations should be put into practice in order to better ensure a smooth transition from conflict to peacekeeping and then on to peace.
Ms Gemma Ganlond threw light on the role of women in the IoK dispute and the need better involve women in peace negotiations.
She noted that after the Shopian incident, where two young women were raped and murdered, female members of civil society engaged themselves in investigations with a very different verdict and interpretation.
Khalid Mehmood outlined the tragedy of the Kunan Poshpora incident and called for an international effort to seek justice in the case.
Ms Eva Malisuis suggested a number of ways in which conflicts resolution should appreciate the role that women play.
She said that women should be at the table throughout discussions with an equal stake and influence on the decision making process as men.
A series of recommendations were undertaken and they will be delivered at the upcoming 16th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva in March.
