DAVOS: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Friday warned of the widening technological advancements between the developed and the under-developed world and urged the need to bridge the gap to ensure a uniform socio-economic progress at all tiers.
Gilani was speaking here at the opening session of the Informal Gathering of the World Economic Leaders (IGWEL) on the theme of "Defining the Imperatives for 2012".
The gathering, a private meeting of the heads of government, international organisations, senior ministers and select private sector representatives, was aimed at defining and prioritizing the governance imperatives in 2012 to steer the global economy towards a new growth path.
The Prime Minister said the high costs of connectivity and lack of telecommunication infrastructure, particularly in the rural areas was one of the major problems of the developing countries.
He said there was a need to find ways and means to bridge this divide. He said it was also a challenge for developing countries that need to provide access to education, without which new information technologies were meaningless.
Gilani said the government accords high priority to education as it was the fundamental right of every child and would ensure they are provided all facilities in this regard.
The Prime Minister also called for creating a positive enabling environment for international peace, security and cooperation which was vital for revival of the global economy.
He said full revival of growth and macro-economic stability can only be achieved through a collaborative approach by all the stakeholders.
He urged the policy makers to learn lessons from global financial and economic crisis and said it was a global problem that requires a global solution.
Regarding the need for employment and social stability, Gilani said labour markets were vital to cater to the needs of 190 million unemployed and over 500 million job seekers, worldwide.
He called for providing young people self employment through micro entrepreneurship. He called for educating the youth in a way to foster innovation and creativity in them.
Towards achieving a sustainable development, Prime Minister Gilani said his government would welcome and support efforts towards greening economies and said Pakistan would be glad to share its perspective at the forthcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development, aimed at uniting the world towards this cherished goal.
Prime Minister Gilani, along with President of Mexico Felipe Calderon and Prime Minister of Finland Jyrki Tapani Katainen, Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, were the discussion leaders at the session.
It was also attended by Kevin Rudd, foreign minister of Australia, President of World Bank Robert B Zoellick, among others.
