Merkel to embark on two-day China trip: Berlin

Published Updated

imgBERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel will next week travel to China for talks with Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao, as well as holding a key speech on the euro crisis, her spokesman said on Friday.

Merkel will meet Wen and Hu in Beijing on Thursday before addressing the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on "finance and currency issues," Steffen Seibert told a regular briefing here.

Wen will then accompany her on a trip to the southern province of Guangzhou where they will visit a firm, participate in an economic forum and meet German and Chinese business leaders, Seibert added.

Germany and China are the world's top two exporters and have vibrant trade links.

According to the latest data available from the German statistics office, Germany imported 77 billion euros ($101 billion) -- 10 percent of its total imports -- from China in 2010 and exported 53 billion euros, six percent of exports.
