MADRID: Spain's unemployment rate shot to 22.85 percent in the final quarter of 2011, the highest in the industrialised world, as jobless numbers hit 5.27 million, official figures showed Friday.
The unemployment rate was a near 17-year record, surging from 21.52 percent the previous quarter as the jobless queue burst through the five-million level, the National Statistics Institute report showed.
