Libyan ambassador to Indonesia resigns

Published Updated

JAKARTA: The Libyan ambassador to Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei has resigned from his posts to protest against Moamer Kadhafi's bloody crackdown on the Libyan people, a report said Wednesday.Salaheddin M. El Bishari told The Jakarta Post newspaper that it was his "personal decision" and he was worried for the safety of his family back in Libya.

"Soldiers are killing unarmed civilians mercilessly. Using heavy weaponry, fighter jets and mercenaries against its own people. It is not acceptable. I have had enough of it. I don't tolerate it anymore," he said."I have submitted my resignation as secretary of the Libyan People's Council in Indonesia in response to what's going on in my country."The ambassador was not available to confirm his comments and foreign ministry officials were not answering their phones.

The UN Security Council on Tuesday condemned the violence and the use of force against civilians, deplored the repression against peaceful demonstrators and expressed deep regret at the deaths of hundreds of civilians.Libyan authorities have acknowledged at least 300 dead in the past week, but rights groups say the toll could be as high as 400.Kadhafi ordered his forces to crush the "rats" on the streets, warning armed protesters they would be executed and vowing to fight to the death. The Arab world's longest serving ruler said he would die as a martyr rather than give up power.
