MILAN: Italian power company Edison on Tuesday said it had registered a slowdown in its supplies of Libyan natural gas provided by energy major ENI, the biggest foreign energy producer in Libya.
A source at Edison told AFP that the company had been told by ENI that there had been a lowering of supplies through the Green stream pipeline that connects Libya to Italy. ENI declined to comment on the report.
Edison buys around four billion cubic metres of Libyan gas from ENI.
Libya is one of the biggest energy producers in Africa and provides around 13 percent of Italy's gas supplies and 23 percent of its oil.
Italy earlier said it was readying its natural gas reserves in case of interruptions in supplies from Libya.
"If we face a scenario of an interruption of supplies, the security committee on gas supplies has been already alerted and normal and extra reserves will be used," said Stefano Saglia, Italy's junior energy minister.
"There should therefore be no problems. Historically even in the toughest times, (Moamer) Kadhafi's Libya has never interrupted supplies," he said.
