MULTAN: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said on Friday that PPP would continue to extend support to deprived communities at all forums including National Assembly as well as provincial assemblies to safeguard their rights.
He said this while addressing a ceremony after inaugurating the PTV Multan centre completed recently at a cost of Rs 376 million. Federal Minister For Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan was also present.
The PM said that Seraiki people had been demanding protection to their rights for the last many years and PPP-led government was committed to support them.
He said that opening of PTV centre in Multan was actually a vindication to the demand of new province of the people of South Punjab.
PM Gilani said that people of South Punjab were forced to live with a sense of deprivation for years. He added that those who do not fully comprehend what people mean when they talk about their rights would soon understand it fully.
He said that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had inaugurated the PTV centre in Lahore and it was again the PPP-led government that opened a PTV centre in Multan today in line with the vision of martyred PPP leaders Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto. He said that his party would continue to move forward while taking guidance from the vision of martyred PPP leaders.
PM Gilani said that PPP-led government made a sincere effort to end the sense of deprivation among the people of South Punjab. Those who oppose such initiatives were trying to create troubles for the incumbent democratic government. He, however, added that their attempts were bound to fail.
He said that people would reject those who were opposing initiatives to protect the rights of people of South Punjab.
The PM said that the PPP-led government accepted the demand of people of KPK regarding their identity, gave rights to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, and added that people of South Punjab would also get their rights. He added that PPP-led government would continue supporting demand for creation of South Punjab as new province.
He said that Multan was among the oldest living cities on earth and was comparable to Damascus. Multan's civilization, its literature and heritage were different and the newly built PTV centre would promote this heritage before the world.
The PM said that during the Mughal era Multan was the capital of Sindh and the grandson of renowned saint Hazrat Musa Pak Gilani Shaheed was then the governor of Multan.
Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani recalled that there was a saying during the British rule in the sub-continent that those who want to get bachelors degree in political science should go to Multan, for Masters degree to Muzaffargarh and those who wish to do their Ph.D should go to Dera Ghazi Khan.
He said that the newly built PTV centre would help project the work of poets, writers and artists and overall culture and heritage of this area.
