CARACAS: Venezuela denied Monday that Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi was on his way to the South American country, after British Foreign Secretary William Hague suggested he could be 'on his way' there.
Government sources in Caracas told AFP there had been "no contact" with Kadhafi or his administration, amid widespread protests across the North African country.
"I have no idea where they got this information. It's not true," said the Venezuelan official, who asked not to be named.
Earlier Monday Hague told reporters in Brussels he had no specific information on reports that Kadhafi was actually in Venezuela, but said he had "seen information that suggests he is on his way."
Firebrand Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has built strong ties with Kadhafi in recent years, most recently visiting Libya in October last year.
The official Libyan JANA news agency quoted Chavez at the time saying the two had "talked for hours." The two countries also signed a string of joint accords in several fields including energy and transport.
In 2009 Chavez also visited in Libya for ceremonies marking 40 years since Kadhafi came to power on September 1, 1969, and the Libyan leader awarded him the "Kadhafi Human Rights Prize" in 2005.
A football stadium in Libya was also named after Chavez in March 2009.
