Tehrik-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan has urged Supreme Court to suspend the notification that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued to hold by-elections on vacant seats of the National and provincial assemblies on February 25, 2012.
A Civil Miscellaneous Application filed in the Supreme Court on Friday by Imran Khan stated that the apex court had passed an order on January 19, 2012 wherein the Election Commission was restrained from holding by-elections on vacant seats on the basis of bogus electoral rolls having as many as 37,185,998 unverified votes.
Khan said despite restraining order, which was passed in very clear and unambiguous terms and in the presence of the respondent - ECP's secretary - the ECP notified on January 27, that by-elections would be held on February 25, 2012 on vacant seats of National and provincial assemblies in violation of the court's order. He contended that it was evident that the ECP secretary was going to hold elections on the said vacant seats on the basis of the "polluted" voter lists containing a large number of unverified votes.
