Consciousness is irreversible. The revolutionary slogans by those that are against the people's democracy, just for the reason that the democratic struggle of the people of Pakistan has given them a high level of consciousness. The anti-people's democracy forces have to borrow revolutionary slogans from the progressive pro-people camp to seek attention.
The People's elected President Asif Ali Zardari has believed that only real democracy can deliver. In this transition of democracy era, Prime Minister Gilani is already the longest serving elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. The People's Party and allies government will be presenting its 5th budget in the National Assembly.
President Zardari has addressed the Parliament four times, an event that had become almost non-existent and had lost its meaning and purpose during the last 2 decades. It was because of his constant persuasion that arbitrary powers of the President were curtailed, Parliament was empowered and provincial autonomy was given to the province through the 18th Amendment.
The politics of revenge has been done away with and all atrocities against the President's person and the party in the past governments have been forgiven. Yet what is the reason that the doctorial mindset reactionaries, instead of preparing for the next general elections are hell bent on weakening the people's government? The efforts to weaken the democratic system are not new. Ever since the People's Party has taken over power, it is a routine of those opponents to pick up non-issues and to blow them out of proportion.
Opposition has been unleashing predictions, rumours, blatant lies to engineer the fall of the elected government and to make their wishes come true. Yet this government has faced every attack and all the conspiracies of the reactionaries have failed. What has happened is that as soon as a rumour gets exposed the opponents invent another rumour to keep their own hopes alive.
All the tricks that had succeeded in the past are failing miserably this time around. The only reason is that political consciousness of people has moved forward with the time. No false propaganda, no slogan-mongering, no emotional rhetoric can fool the cold logic and the rationale of the common man. However, people have their own simple criteria of separating hypocrisy from truth. And that simple criteria lies in the fact as to who has suffered and laid down their lives for the ideals they proclaim and who is a renegade in the face of slightest hardships and has worked against the interests of common man while occupying state power.
If the intent and purpose is to strengthen democracy then the only path is that of joining hands and to facilitate holding of free and transparent elections at their appointed time, whereby people of Pakistan can deliver their judgement on the performance of the government. No other judgement except one that is delivered by the people in a free election would have any legitimacy, constitutional or moral. Politics is art of the possible, but making a nation is the art of impossible and what PPP leadership doing is the art of impossible.
The people have a stake in democracy. They and their progressive leaderships have struggled for it and have laid down their lives for the democratic cause. Power belongs to the people and they want it exercised through their elected assemblies. They firmly oppose all unconstitutional and backdoor methods to undermine the power of the assemblies elected by them under the constitution. The opponents of democratic system hope that they can succeed in fooling the people. Can they easily be cheated in the name of change yet again?
