Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that the government is implementing a comprehensive programme for the provision of modern, comfortable and affordable transport facilities to the masses.
He also said modern transport system has been introduced in the provincial metropolis and its scope will soon be extended to other big cities as well and added that work is also in progress on the project of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System and Turk experts are soon reaching Lahore for implementation of the project.
He expressed these views while addressing a meeting that was held here on Tuesday to review pace of implementation of Bus Rapid Transit System project and provision of transport facilities to the people. Provincial Minister for Transport Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, Chairman Lahore Transport Company Kh. Ahmad Hassaan, Member Punjab Assembly Mehr Ishtiaq Ahmad, Chairman Planning and Development, Secretary Finance and Secretary Transport were present in the meeting.
The Chief Minister said provision of modern transport facilities to the masses is among the priorities of the government and besides supply of buses, work is also in progress on Bus Rapid Transit System. He said the government has fulfilled its promise by providing modern buses to the people of Lahore and now 575 more buses are being imported, which in addition to Lahore, will be plied in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and Bahawalpur. He directed that LC should immediately be opened for acquiring the buses so that more buses could be plied in the cities in accordance with the schedule.
He further directed that the Lahore Transport Company should take prompt measures for the provision of modern transport facilities to the people as early as possible and the best operators should be selected for this purpose. He said uninterrupted supply of CNG is of vital importance for the smooth operation of public transport and the Federal Government should immediately be contacted for this purpose.
