The Senators belonging to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and Jamaat-e-Islami while expressing their indignation on recent drone attacks in North Waziristan tribal agency, lodged strong protest over non-implementation of a decision to shoot down the CIA-operated unmanned US predators.
They referred to the decision made by the parliament and the army in wake of Salalah airstrike and staged a walkout to show their anger on the recent attack that claimed five lives. Opposition leader in Senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri while speaking on a point of order said that if the government and the army had no stomach, they must stop saying that any drone if entered Pakistan airspace would be shot down.
He said that country's soil and facilities must not be allowed to be used against its own people. He warned the government of a revolution if peoples' expectations were not met. "Don't make tall claims if you don't have the guts to act and stop befooling people," he added.
He lamented that the incumbent government was pursuing Musharraf's policies that have brought miseries for the innocent people of tribal areas. The CIA operatives, he added, are as active in the country as they were in military dictator's days. Haideri said that all the political parties stood by the government when it decided to halt the Nato supplies to its forces, stationed in Afghanistan. The army was also backed by all and sundry when they issued instructions to bring down US predators if they dare to attack in future.
Professor Khurshid Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) criticised the government, saying that it has miserably failed in implementing the standing instructions of the parliament. He said why the decision supported by both the parliament and people to shoot down the drones was not implemented.
Professor Ibrahim of JI said there were reports that some airbases were still being used by US forces and urged the government to immediately get them vacated. He also sought an assurance from the government that the Nato supply route would not be reopened. Responding the point of order, federal minister for interior Rehman Malik termed the recent US drone attack a direct hit on the sovereignty of Pakistan. The minister said that the government had already referred the recent incident to the concerned committee.
Besides, a joint session of the parliament, he said, would also be convened next week to decide about Nato supplies and continuous drone attacks. "We have tried to convince the US that such actions will be counter productive but it seems that they turned a deaf ear to out concerns," he regretted.
Malik went on saying that they were a peace loving nations and making all the sacrifices to save the region and the world at large from the scourge of terrorism and it must be acknowledged. "This is not our war I am disappointed by the attitude of those for whom we are fighting, so let's take it to the UN to decide about the highhandedness of our allies despite shedding more blood than anyone else," he added.
