A four-day book fair was kicked off on Tuesday at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad at its Main Library. It consists of 32 stalls and a collection of more than 0.15 million books offered at subsidised rates to the students. UAF Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan flanked by all deans and directors inaugurated the fair.
A large number of visitors thronged the UAF on the opening day to catch a glimpse of the latest books on offer. Publishers from across the country and foreign are participating in it. There were several families with young children browsing through the titles on offer. The silent feature of the fair was a vast range of printed material ranging from agriculture to literature.
Agricultural books giving the guideline about increasing productivity and modern methods became a source of attraction for the students. Besides it, the public was also engrossed by classics of both Urdu and English literature. The lure of festival was a stall containing Holy Quran. It was having a machine reciting the Quran in 13 voices of famous Maulanas with the translation in many languages. Technical manuals, dictionaries and books dealing with computer science, business management, and accounting were also available.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the Vice Chancellor termed book fair an encouraging move towards boosting up reading habits among the students. He said the objective of the event was to promote book reading habit in society as well as ensure provision of books at discount rates to book-lovers at one place. He said the habit of reading books was very important for not only education and research but also development of one's character and personality. He said that it was observed that youth preferred using internet to get the information, resultantly trend of book reading was decreasing. He called for curtailing the trend by promoting such activities.
