Railways faces acute shortage of fuel

Published Updated

Cash starved Pakistan Railways (PR) faced acute shortage of fuel on Thursday despite permission from high ups to purchase diesel from the open market and trains operation remained suspended for nine hours and passengers suffered a lot.
According to details, Taizgam Express for Rawalpindi, Allama Iqbal Express for Sialkot, Awami Express for Peshawar, Karakurram Express for Karachi, Karachi Express for Karachi, Ghauri Express for Faisalabad and Rawalpindi, could not depart on time and the shuttle trains also remained suspended. Passengers remained stranded for nine hours at the Lahore Railway Station.
It is pertinent to mention here that in the last month, Pakistan Railways administration faced an acute shortage of diesel due to non-payment of out standing dues to the Pakistan State Oil Company. Consequently, Ministry of Railways allowed General Manager Operation to purchase diesel from the open market to run trains on time but it failed to reduce difficulties of the passengers, as it did not buy diesel from the open market in advance.
An official of the Pakistan Railways told this scribe that now two lac forty thousand liters diesel had been purchased from the open market and train system had been made operational and various trains had departed for their destination.
