An Egyptian court cancelled a ban Sunday on veiled anchorwomen appearing on state-owned television, the broadcaster's website reported. The administrative court in Alexandria, Egypt's second biggest city, said the veil did not hamper the wearer from doing her job, according to the report.
The ruling was in response to a suit filed by Lamia Hussein, who said she had been barred since 2008 from appearing on a state-run TV station, because of her Islamic headgear.
The court also ordered the Egyptian authorities to pay Hussein 20,000 Egyptian pounds (3,280 dollars) in compensation. Privately-owned broadcasters already allow women presenters to appear wearing the veil, which in recent years has become increasingly popular in the predominantly Muslim country.
