Won inches up

Published Updated

The South Korean won ended up on Thursday despite discouraging data that pointed toward a gloomy outlook 2012 for the domestic economy which combined with continued liquidity crunch in the eurozone could put pressure on risk assets like the won. The local currency closed at 1,151.8 to the dollar, compared to Thursday's domestic close of 1,156.0.
"Although the international financial situation wasn't rosy, there weren't many players to trade on those factors. The won was pulled here and there by the market's flow," said a local bank dealer. The won finished the year down 1.5 percent from the end of 2010 on Thursday, the last trading day for the foreign exchange market in South Korea. The markets will be closed on Friday and open an hour late on Monday 10 am (0100 GMT).
