General elections in the country will be held in their scheduled time, in 2013, said Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Firdous Ashiq Awan at Sukkur airport, on Tuesday. "Political activities prior to polls strengthen democratic culture, however, attempts to create political instability under the pretext of these pre-poll activities will lead to problems," she told journalists.
The minister on her way to pay tribute to Benazir Bhutto at Garhi Khuda Baksh said BB had lit the lamp of democracy with her blood and this has today elevated the parliament.
"Future of the country lies in democracy and existence of all political parties depends on its continuity," said the minister. She said PPP believes in the power of ballot and would hail any change brought through public vote.
"The PPP government enjoys the public mandate and any change forced through unconstitutional means will never lead to stability," said Firdous Ashiq Awan.
The minister said BB had sacrificed her life for the principle of reconciliation and this has brought about the much-needed strength to the political culture of the country. The nascent democracy needed impetus and close co-operation among different political parties to strengthen democratic culture in the country, said Firdous Ashiq Awan.
"The situation in the country demands unity among the political workers and their parties," she said. The minister in reply to a question said, mutual respect and confidence among politicians is needed to thwart international conspiracies against democracy.
She said PPP has strictly followed the policy of reconciliation and it was for the first time in the national history that maximum number of standing and steering committees of the parliament are headed by opposition members.
