Diabetes termed mother of all diseases

Diabetes is the mother of all diseases which should be eliminated through vigorous campaign launched on war footing like in the case of dengue virus. The number of diabetic patients will be doubled by 2025, if proper steps and public awareness against the disease are not ensured.
These views were expressed by diabetes experts during an awareness walk and symposium held in connection with the World Diabetes Day at Lahore General Hospital here on Monday. Dr Saeed Elahi, Parliamentary Secretary on Health Punjab was the chief guest at the event while Principal PGMI and LGH Professor Tariq Salahuddin, ex-Principal King Edward Medical College Dr Mehmood Ali Malik, MS LGH Dr Zafar Ikram, Professor Ghayyas-un-Nabi Tayyab, Diabetes Specialist Dr Imran Hassan Khan and faculty members, doctors, nurses, nurse students and a large number of citizens were present on the occasion.
A free diabetes camp was also organised at the hospital where sugar tests of hundreds of patients were conducted free of cost. In order to maintain the data of sugar patients a computer center was also inaugurated at this occasion. While addressing the participants, Dr Saeed Elahi said that the walk will go a along way to make the masses know how to be safe from this disease. He said that all the necessary arrangements have been made to establish PGMI Medical College, which will be very helpful to facilitate the brilliant students of medical science.
Principal PGMI Professor Tariq Salahuddin said that the way Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, with the dedicated and co-ordinated contribution by doctors and paramedical staff, defeated the dengue virus is a glorious chapter of our national history. Even the Sri Lankan and Indonesian experts have also recognised the spirit and talent of our doctors and paramedical staff, he added. He said that Punjab government would not have to spend additional expenditure for PGMI Medical College as the institute already has all the necessary infrastructure.
While addressing symposium Professor Mehmood Malik, Professor Ghayyas-un-Nabi, Professor Robina Sohail, Professor Abdul Munan, Dr Mariya Babar, Dr Umar Adil and Dr Imran Hassan said that diabetes is a silent killer which affects the human heart and kidneys very badly. They said that more than ten million people are suffering from this disease all over the world.
