Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) has proposed the provincial government to set up trade terminals at Khokhrapar to boost up economy by starting trade through Khokhrapar-Munabao border. This proposal has been sent to Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah through a summary a few weeks back. The summary stated that Sindh government would earn more than Rs 1 billion in the head of Sales Tax on Services with the establishing of trade terminals at Khokhrapar.
It said that all the provinces like Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had their trade terminals on their road-trade-routes, therefore, it was the need of the hour to establish trade terminals at Khokhrapar. When this scribe talked to the people of district Umerkot through telephone, they welcomed the move and said that previously this region was connected with India through this border route and trade was being done which was a reason of prosperity of this area.
Ghulam Hussein said that before partition there was a dry port area Khokhrapar, from where rice, wheat, cotton clothes, dates were exported to India. He added that now dates from Sukkur were exported through Wahga border. He added that if the proposed terminals were established such products would easily and timely reach in Indian markets.
He said that most of traditional dresses wore in Thar were prepared in Rajasthan, India, which will find a good market here. Wali Mohammad said till 1965 war, this area of the province was linked with India through rail. He added that spices, traditional dresses, betel nuts, leaves of Beri and Paanf were imported from India and Pakistan used to export ceramics, rugs, cotton cloths, pure cotton, horses and other livestock.
He said that there was no industry in Sindh especially in Thar belt, adding that the area was depended on Chinese market. When Indian products will enter these markets, a competitive environment will develop, which ultimately benefit the people, he added.
