A Brazilian television cameraman was fatally shot early Sunday while filming during a police raid outside Rio de Janeiro, as bullets flew at one of the city's most notorious favelas.
Gelson Domingos, 46, was shot while covering special police operations at the Brazilian port city's Antares shantytown and was declared dead at a local hospital. Officials said the bullet that killed Domingos pierced the protective flak jacket he was wearing and that he was already dead when he arrived at a hospital emergency room.
"Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful," a government statement said after the police operation.
Domingos was filming for the popular television show "TV Bandeirantes." The program eulogised the TV journalist, a married father of three, as "a victim of the violence that affects innocent people every day in Brazil."
Four suspected criminals were killed and six accused drug traffickers were arrested in the operation, said police, who also seized a sizeable cache of weapons.
With Rio due to serve as the host city for the World Cup final in 2014 and the 2016 Olympic Games, authorities in Brazil have been pushing steadily into several slums to stamp out nests of crime and violence.
