Prices of tomatoes sharply increase despite import

The price of tomato has been further increased by Rs,20 per kg or from Rs 100 per kg to Rs 120 per kg in retail market despite import from neighbouring countries It seems that consumers are not benefiting either because of costlier imports or huge profit margin being charged by retailers. No change has been witnessed in the prices of onion and it contained to be sold at Rs 50 per kg.
Lady's finger, beans and pear gourd are available for Rs 60. Bitter gourd is Rs 50 per kg, string beans Rs 60, cabbage Rs 60, carrot Rs 60 and green chilly Rs 60 per kg, lemon Rs 80 per kg. Bandgobhi and Phool Gobhi rate prevailed at Rs 70 and Rs 80 per kg, garlic Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg, ginger Rs 70 per kg and potato Rs 20 per kg.
Surprisingly, when the rains and floods had destroyed 80 per cent ready crop, onion price had not exceeded beyond Rs 40 per kg from Rs 20 per kg in the retail markets. The retailers attributing the price rise to short supply, and claimed that the prices would remain high and there is little hope of a let-up with the Eid-ul-Azha round the corner.
