30 feared dead in Indian bridge collapse

At least 30 people, including many women and children, are feared dead after a foot bridge over a river in north-eastern India collapsed on Saturday, police said. About 70 people were on the bridge trying to catch a type of insect called the "Ghandi puk", eaten by local tribes in the remote state of Arunachal Pradesh, when the bridge gave way, senior police officer K. Aya told AFP by telephone.
Authorities have rescued 28 people and recovered three bodies from the Kameng river nearly 370 miles (600 kilometres) from Guwahati, the capital of Assam state. "We fear that 30 people have lost their lives," Aya said. "They were all trying to catch the insects and suddenly the bridge collapsed."
