The South Asian Forum for Education Development (SAFED) conducted Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) Pakistan 2011 survey to examine learning levels of children between 5-16 living in rural areas of 27 districts in Punjab. The survey was conducted in 30 villages in each district including Lahore in Punjab. The trained surveyors conducted survey of children in 20 households in each district.
As many as 60 trained volunteers collected information about 3-5 years of age children and assess learning levels of children through Grade-II and III curriculum. The children's learning levels were assessed in Urdu, English and arithmetic. The SAFED and Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) has started assessing the survey results and would compile a consolidated report.
Talking to the media, SAFED/ITA Research Associate Safyan Jabbar said that parents were unanimous in saying that government was not making efforts to improve quality of education in public schools. They, however, said that quality of education should be improved in the government schools for the benefit of children. He said that it was pity that no parent knew about the School Councils.
He said that various districts' survey showed that many schools were one-teacher schools and other teachers had either got transferred or not attending their schools. Still, many schools had PTC teachers, who were unable to teach students according to modern requirements. Jabbar said that parents did want to send their children to schools but they said that they could not compel teachers to teach their children properly.
