Government urged to efficiently tackle climate change

The speakers while speaking at a one-day seminar on flood and climate changes have urged upon the government and community leaders to be efficient for facing the challenge of climate change to avoid human and physical losses and emphasised to improve the existing infrastructure of towns and cities.
The urge came at a seminar organised by WWF Pakistan in collaboration with the University of Sindh at its Senate Hall on Thursday. The seminar was presided over by Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr Parveen Shah who advised the government's planning and development division that there is a need to include the recommendations made by the scholars in various seminars for the proper implementation. The recommendations and suggestions of seminars are always good but there is need to monitor for the implementation with full spirit Dr Parveen said, adding that we have made enough advocacy and recommendations for betterment of the society but there is lack of the implementation.
He appreciated collaborative seminar and presentation by the experts and expressed great concern on recent damages due to rainfall in province of Sindh. She said that people who suffer due to rainfall needs proper attention of the Government for their proper setting and added that looking climate change the government should take proper measures to avoid from any human or infrastructure loss in the future.
Dr Badar Ghouri from Suparco in his presentation on role of space applications in flood monitoring said that that sate light offer lot of opportunities to research scholars and helping to made life easier. He said that during recent rainfall and flood during last year the Suparco assessed the damages and using sate light information was passed concerned agencies to carryout the relief activities. He pointed out that Pakistan experienced major floods during 1928, 1929, 1955, 1973, 1976, 1980,1992,2010 and 2011 and added that Pakistan experienced worst monsoon rain and flood 2010.
He said that the commission had advised the government during 2010 to take measures for storage of floodwater during 2010 to use it in dry condition. He advised that community should be involved in decision-making, planning, and implementation process for sustainable solutions.
Sardar Sarfraz from the Metrology Department in his presentation said that recent flood and rain of 2010 and 2011 affected Pakistan badly in perspective of climate changes. He pointed out that dengue virus is also an indication of our climate changed. Nasir Ali Panhwar of WWF-Pakistan said that there is generally question that climate is changing or not and added that it is not fiction but it is fact that climate is changing. He said that climate change has become global issue in result of burning of fossil fuels and added that Pakistan is affected the climate change. He said that Sindh province last year suffer most due to flood and during current year due to rainfall and added that Sindh is in top on damages due to last year flood and due to rainfall. He said that flood in year 2010 affected the right-bank of river and this year left bank of river.
He said that we need to revisit current development path which lacking the climate-change concept. He pointed out that University of Sindh and WWF-Pakistan has singed MoU and this seminar was a collaborative effort to sought help from the academia and create awareness among the students about climate change. Professor Dure Shahwar and Professor Amanullah Mahar from the University of Sindh, Nawaz Kumbar, Ameen Keerio, Professor Imtiza Pirzado and Dr Mahmoodul Hassan Mughal also expressed their views on the occasion.
