Punjab Irrigation department has closed down all six monthly non-perennial canals and reduced its water withdrawal from Indus and Mangla zones by 50 percent as harvesting of Kharif crops including rice, cotton and sugarcane is in the process. Canal Regular and consultant Punjab Irrigation, M.H. Siddiqui told Business Recorder here on Thursday that there are about 1,224 non-perennials canals in Punjab including DG Khan, Taunsa Panjnad Canal, Mailsi canal, Marala Ravi link canal.
Most of the non-perennial irrigation canals feed summer crops rice, cotton, sugarcane, maize, vegetables and fodder in the central Punjab. Siddiqui said that Punjab has reduced its water indent from 1,20,.000 cusecs to 49000 cusecs, 24,000 cusecs from Indus and 25,000 cusecs from Indus zone to run its perennial canals, mostly in south Punjab for sowing, growing and maturing of winter Rabi crops.
It is worth mentioning that Punjab Irrigation System commands an area (CCA) of 21.5 million acres. The Irrigation network consisting of 24 main Canal Systems with total capacity of 0.12 million cusecs water which draw allocated discharges from 14 barrages and is diverted to farmers' field through 58,000 outlets.
