Hungary government may cut 30,000 jobs

Hungary's government may cut about 30,000 jobs in central public administration, which would save up to 15 billion forints ($71.2 million) next year, news website origo.hu reported on Thursday. The report, citing unnamed government sources, said the actual number of layoffs from a 250,000-strong workforce may be somewhat lower as several thousand job cuts could come through attrition due to workers retiring.
The report said the job cuts, which would hit 15 percent of the workforce at the institutions affected, would not involve the tax office, which the government has tasked with a clampdown on value-added tax evasion to meet revenue goals.
