A Major of the Pakistan Army has been arrested in connection with the theft of a railway wagon. The ISPR on Monday confirmed the arrest of a serving Major in Pakistan Railways copper scam. The ISPR stated that Major Ayub was arrested for his alleged involvement in the scam and he would be interrogated in the case. Along with Major, five other people including a PR officer have also been arrested.
According to the official of Pakistan Railways, a train with copper wire was sent from Khanewal to Lahore where the wire was to be stored at Mughalpura Workshop. However, the train was moved to Kharian where the copper wire worth millions of rupees was stolen.
Earlier, in a similar case, the National Assembly's sub committee for Pakistan Railways land had charged the Lahore divisional superintendent and other officers with the theft of copper from a freight coach wherein the coach was found abandoned and without copper at Kharian a few hours after it was stolen from a station in Lahore. The federal government had announced an assistance package worth Rs 11 billion to rescue the Pakistan Railways which was under fire for incurring losses worth billions due to mismanagement.
