The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) institute of biochemistry and biotechnology is organising an international conference on Latest Techniques for Conservation of Animal Genetic Resource in Pakistan on 14 to 15 September at university conference hall.
The aim is to promote the role and importance of conservation in the ecosystem and studying the latest concepts of conservation relating to the animal genetic and to train participants to use of different molecular biology techniques involved in animal conservation for human and livestock welfare.
The UVAS institute of biochemistry and biotechnology director Professor Dr Masroor Elahi Baber said that to encourage the studies on characterisation and improved utilisation of important breeds adding that Pakistan is still lagging behind in milk yield because the milk potential of the animal is 3 to 5 liter. Dr Masroor added that scientists should pay their heed to improve the institutional linkages within and outside the country for AnGR activities.
Dr Muhmmad Zubair Yousaf stated that with the current status of Pakistan's enormous but rapidly diminishing Animal Genetic wealth in the absence of an active pursuit for their conservation, the erosion of genetic diversity especially for disease resistance and adaptability to tropical environment is potentially being threatened due to host of reasons.
He further added that this inventory may be much more exhaustive however; it reflects the major issues that are being faced by Pakistani research community to achieve significant gains to prevent the erosion of genetic diversity. This is happening despite the fact that indigenous ANGR like Sahiwal cattle and Nili-Ravi buffalo having globally recognised superiority for disease resistance and tropical adaptability.
