ISLAMABAD: A high level delegation from Mauritius, headed by Foreign Secretary of Mauritius A.P. Neewoorand, Director Trade Policy Asad A.Bhuglah, representatives of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Business Councilis are visiting Pakistan for a three days official visit.
The delegation will call on the Minister of Commerce and hold in depth negotiations with officials to further expand Preferential Trade Agreement signed between two countries in 2007. The agreement is fully operational since October 2010, said a press release issued on Monday.
A delegation from Pakistan had visited Mauritius for Joint Working Group in October 2009, now the Mauritius side is on a reciprocal visit.
Mauritius is coming up as a financial and trade hub for emerging Africa, where it is signatory to numerous agreements and has tremendous potential for enhancing Pakistan trade in the region. The meeting will also look into areas where Mauritius exports could be enhanced to Pakistan.
Besides traditional trade sectors, trade in services offers marked opportunity - where Mauritius is a tourists destination.
Major impediment which is hampering exploiting full potential of trade and tourism between the two countries is absence of direct air flights, the negotiations on which are going on since long without much progress.
Recently the delegations from Rice Exporters of Pakistan, South Asian Federation of Exchanges, Cement Industry, Fauji Foods and Fashion Designers from Pakistan have visited Mauritius to display their products and have first hand business contacts.
Pakistan High Commission has opened a new Commercial Section at Mauritius to assist business community of the two sides to expand areas of cooperation.
It is also worth mentioning that during floods in August 2010, the Government and people of Mauritius expressed tremendous solidarity and goodwill for Pakistan and donated handsome amount.
