Prime Minister and PPP Vice Chairman Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Saturday said that Pakistan was strong today because of 1973 Constitution, nuclear capability and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) having roots in all the four provinces, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
He was addressing an Iftar dinner hosted in honour of PPP office-bearers from Punjab at the Governor's House here. The Prime Minister said that after Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's government, the present PPP government was the first elected and democratic government, which successfully presented its fourth budget, besides resolving all major and outstanding national issues in an amicable manner.
Gilani said that ZA Bhutto was a visionary leader of international stature but unfortunately, he was obstructed by a dictator. However, he added, in his short tenure, Mr Bhutto, while taking all stakeholders on board, had managed to give the country 1973 Constitution 1973, which was keeping it intact.
The PPP founding leader also launched the nuclear programme which made Pakistan an invincible state, he said and added that the PPP being a federal party was equally important in making the country stronger. Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto gave the PPP workers a great vision and manifesto, which ensured success for the party, he said.
Acknowledging the importance of party's affiliated organisations, he said they were PPP's backbone as without which no party could survive. They were the nerve centre of the party, through them the PPP's popularity at grassroots level was judged, he said.
The Prime Minister assured the party office-bearers that a mega convention would be arranged soon at PM Secretariat Islamabad where they would be given due time for a comprehensive debate on all the issues including terrorism, Kashmir cause, FATA reforms, Gilgit-Baltistan etc. Gilani also assured the workers that the party's developmental funds would also be released.
Governor Sardar Latif Khosa and Central Secretary General of PPP Jahangir Badar were also present, while the PPP Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, PPP Divisional Co-ordinator (Faisalabad) Raja Riaz Ahmed, PPP Women Wing President Beelum Hasnain also spoke on the occasion. Qazim Zia representing PPP's Central Executive Committee (CEC) and Federal Council, and Mandi Bahauddin District President Dewan Shameem representing the PPP districts presidents also expressed their views. The members of PPP Punjab executive and finance committees, federal and provincial councils, divisional, regional and district presidents and secretaries general were also present in the dinner.
