Football clubs from Egypt to Zimbabwe will be understandably envious when the 1.178-million-dollar winners-take-all South African Top 8 Cup kicks off Friday. The season-opening competition features the teams that finished first to eighth in the previous championship and includes quarter-finals, two-leg semi-finals and a final.
While it takes 360 minutes to accumulate more than one million dollars in South Africa, Moroccan club FUS Rabat needed 1,620 minutes last year to collect the 660,000-dollar first prize in the African Confederation Cup. There are also 117.000-dollar appearance fees for those in the Top 8 line-up, including major domestic draw cards Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport United get the ball rolling in Cape Town Friday followed by Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic in Pretoria and title holders Pirates against Santos in Soweto Saturday. Chiefs and Wits University complete the schedule in Soweto Sunday.
