Bangladesh remittances up 20 percent

Money sent home by Bangladeshis working abroad surged 20 percent to $1.03 billion in July from a year earlier ahead of the Muslim fasting month of Ramazan, the central bank said on Thursday. The south Asian country received nearly $11.65 billion in remittances from citizens overseas in the fiscal year ended in June, 6 percent above the previous year but the slowest pace of growth in many years.
July growth was good as many sent more money to their families to prepare for Ramazan, which began on August 2, a senior central bank official said adding that inflow of remittances would also be strong in August.
