US copper futures fell to a five-week low on Thursday as commodity markets tumbled on heightened risk aversion by investors worried about the global economy. By 12:30 pm EDT (1630 GMT), the benchmark September copper futures contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange's COMEX metals division was down 2 percent at around $4.25 a lb. It had earlier touched a session bottom of $4.2360 - its lowest level since June 30.
