Forum of Pakistan Ombudsmen (FPO) at a meeting discussed number of issues pertaining to the Ombudsmen community on Saturday. The meeting was held at the Federal Tax Ombudsmen, Regional Office Karachi.
The meeting was chaired by the Hon'ble Dr Muhammad Shoaib Suddle, Federal Tax Ombudsman along with eight other members of the forum including Azhar Ali Farooqi (Federal Insurance Ombudsman), Mussart Hilali (Woman Ombudsman), Chaudhry Muhammad Rashid Khan (Ombudsman Azad Jammu & Kashmir), Khalid Mahmood (Provincial Ombudsman Punjab and Vice-President FPO), Asad Ashraf Malik (Provincial Ombudsman Sindh), Akbar Ali Baloch (Provincial Ombudsman Balochistan), Badshah Gul Wazir (Provincial Ombudsman Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Secretary FPO) and Mansur-ur-Rehman Khan (Banking Mohtasib Pakistan and Treasurer FPO).
The Forum discussed a number of issues pertaining to the Ombudsmen community, particularly how to promote and sustain the institution of Ombudsmen in Pakistan. The issue of ensuring effective accountability of public functionaries, a sine qua non for good governance, received special attention.
Other agenda items included creating public awareness about the role of the Ombudsman, the standardisation of Ombudsmanship across Pakistan, capacity building of Ombudsmen institutions, particularly sharpening their skills in dispute resolution, and winning trust and confidence of citizens while addressing their grievances against maladministration and injustices committed by government officials. It was also decided that the next meeting of the forum would be held at Balochistan in September 2011.-PR
