United Citizens Alliance (UCA) on Saturday staged a protest demonstration against the closure of CNG stations for three days in Punjab and proposed increase in the tariff describing it detrimental to the people of this region. The protest demo was led by Tariq Naeem-ullah Khan. Hundreds of citizens and civil society activists described this decision as discriminatory.
He said that the federal government was treating Punjab as stepmother. All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA) Multan Chapter rejected the recent reports by ECC to increase tariffs and curtailment of gas for CNG stations for 3 days in Punjab and 2 days in Sindh. Rana Shiraz Bashir, a spokesman of APCNGA South Punjab termed the decision as biased that would cripple CNG sector.
He said huge investment was made in the CNG sector in the light of Petroleum Policy 1994, which assures that 'The existing price differential between industrial gas tariff and motor gasoline will be maintained as an incentive for CNG use.' He said that 3 million CNG vehicles ply on the roads countrywide where public has invested Rs 115 billion in CNG kits. Approximately, 6 percent CNG is used in the CNG sector whereas the revenue contribution is Rs 25 billion per annum.
