Implementation of Act: LHC adjourns hearing till first week of August
The Lahore High Court adjourned till first week of August the hearing of a petition seeking implementation of Punjab Public Defender Act 2007 as law officer informed the court that working papers have been prepared and would be placed before cabinet in its next meeting.
Petitioner Muhammad Azhar Siddique advocate opposed the government's request and said it was using delaying tactics and comments have not been submitted despite lapse of considerable time. Siddiqui said that the Punjab Assembly with a view to provide free legal assistance to poor people in courts promulgated Punjab Public Defender Service Act, 2007.
He said the law was meant to secure better life for poor people but despite the lapse of four year the government had made no efforts so far for enforcement of this law. He said it was negligence on the part of the Punjab government and prayed the court to direct the government to implement the said law in letter and spirit.
